Care
Care difficulty: BeginnerVigorous growth and a generally robust character make this species suitable for growers learning basic staghorn care. It readily develops multiple crowns into a clump.
Provide good light and ventilation. Fertile fronds may hang more loosely in weak light and grow more upright in stronger light with good airflow.
This species has relatively strong cold tolerance. Plants may tolerate temperatures near 0°C (32°F), but this is a tolerance observation rather than a recommended everyday growing temperature.
Although the plant is robust, its fronds can be damaged easily. Handle them gently when moving or working around the plant.
Description
An evergreen colony-forming fern that grows on trees and occasionally on rock. Rhizomes and root-associated buds produce multiple crowns, each with its own roots. Overlapping shields form a shared nest that collects water and organic material. Upper and lower colony members can develop different forms and contribute differently to water capture, photosynthesis, and reproduction.
Shield fronds are usually 10–30 cm (4–12 in) across, broader than long, with rounded, wavy, or shallowly lobed upper edges. Young shields are green with pale star-shaped hairs. Older shields become brown and papery, remaining over the roots to retain moisture and trap litter.
